history

Netherrealm Studios emerged from the central development studio of the former American game manufacturer Midway Games . Under the creative direction of Ed Boon and John Tobias , the fighting game series Mortal Kombat was created in 1992 as a competitive product to the successful Capcom title Street Fighter II . It developed into one of the main Midways brands, for whose further development the studio remained primarily responsible. When Midway went bankrupt in 2009, the studio and the Mortal Kombat brand were considered one of the company's most valuable corporate values. It was taken over by Time Warner in July 2009 and has since operated under the name WB Games Chicago. With the announcement of the game Mortal Kombat in 2010, the renaming to NetherRealm Studios was announced. The name refers to a location in the Mortal Kombat series. Ed Boon is in charge of the studio.
