Square Enix Limited , also known as Square Enix Europe , is a UK game software company and a subsidiary of Square Enix . Prior to the takeover by Square Enix, the company operated under the name SCi Entertainment Group and later Eidos plc .

Company history

The company was founded in 1988 by Jane Cavanagh under the name The Sales Curve. In 1994 the company changed its name to Sales Curve Interactive, and since going public on the London Stock Exchange in 1999, the company finally appeared as SCi Entertainment Group, plc, and the company sold its games through its subsidiary SCi Games. In 2005, SCi took over competitor Eidos Interactive , and all games have since been published under the Eidos label.

In December 2006, Warner Bros. Entertainment acquired 10.3% of SCi Entertainment. In return, SCi received the right to develop games under licenses from Warner Bros., including Batman .

In January 2008, company founder Jane Cavanagh resigned from her position as CEO after unsuccessful takeover talks for the ailing publisher under pressure from shareholders, and two other leading employees left with her. Cavanagh's successor was her previous CFO Phil Rogers. In February 2008, SCi laid off 200 employees (around 25% of the workforce) due to shrinking sales and higher losses. At the end of the 2007/2008 financial year (cut-off date June 30th), SCi had annual sales of £ 119 million (EUR 150.5 million) with a net loss of £ 136 million (approx. EUR 172 million at the time). In April 2008, Warner Bros. Entertainment increased its stake to 35%, and the distribution rights to SCi titles in the USA, Canada and Mexico were obtained. At the end of 2008, SCi Entertainment took over the name of its publishing subsidiary and renamed itself to Eidos plc .

In March 2009, Eidos plc was acquired by the Japanese publisher Square Enix for a purchase price of 84.3 million British pounds (~ 120 million US dollars). After the merger with Square Enix's European headquarters in November 2009, the company was renamed Square Enix Europe. The previous Eidos CEO Phil Rogers took over the management of the subsidiary, and other Eidos managers took on leading positions in the joint venture.

In June 2017, the Danish developer studio IO Interactive was separated from Square Enix Europe as a subsidiary through a management buyout and will continue to exist as an independent studio.
