Alex Raymond (born October 2, 1909 in New Rochelle , † September 6, 1956 ) was an American draftsman .

At the beginning of his career, Raymond Ghost was an established artist in comic series appearing in newspapers , such as Tim Tyler's Luck by Lyman Young or Tillie the Toiler by Russ Westover. In late 1933 he won a competition from the newspaper publisher King Features and was allowed to design the detective comic series Secret Agent X9 written by Dashiell Hammett , which debuted in the newspapers on January 22, 1934. On January 7th of the same year, two more Raymond series had started: the classic science fiction comic Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim . While Raymond gave Secret Agent X9 in 1935 due to overwork, he looked after Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim until he joined the army in 1944. During the Second World War , Raymond served in the US Marines . From 1946 his comic strip about the detective Rip Kirby appeared daily . In 1949 he received the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society for this series . From 1950 to 1951 he was President of the National Cartoonists Society .

Alex Raymond died in 1956 as a result of a car accident near Westport .

He is the great-uncle of actor Matt Dillon .
