Jaxon
Jaxon is the pseudonym of Jack Jackson (born May 15, 1941 in Pandora , † June 8, 2006 in Stockdale ), an American comic artist and author of books on the history of Texas. He is one of the artists of the underground comix and was a co-founder of the comic book publisher Rip Off Press .
Life
During his studies he worked with Gilbert Shelton, Fred Todd and Dave Moriaty for The Texas Ranger magazine , which was published at the University of Texas at Austin with a circulation of up to 12,000 copies. He was also able to publish some stories in Charlatan , a student magazine that was edited by Bill Killeen.
God Nose was self-published in 1964 with 1000 copies and contained several short stories in which God, represented with a very big nose, had philosophical conversations with his "subordinates". Jackson used the pen name Jaxon so as not to jeopardize his government job. He had a degree in accounting and was involved in the introduction of sales tax. God Nose sold quickly and with the money he had earned, Jackson made a trip to Europe with Moriaty, which took them in wintry Europe on motorcycles from London via France and Spain to Lisbon. From there they used a Yugoslav freighter to travel home.
Jackson moved to San Francisco in 1966 , where he took on two roles at the Family Dog Production music agency founded by Chet Helms : In addition to the bookkeeping, he was also responsible for creating and selling the concert posters. In 1967 he took a break in Hawaii and began drawing again. After his return he published Strips in the Express Times and used the name Jaxon again.
In 1969 he founded the publishing house Rip Off Press with Gilbert Shelton , Fred Todd , and Dave Moriaty , which initially produced the posters for Family Dog Production and also published Comix. A reprint of God Nose was one of the first projects.
Jackson was best known for his historical works that take up the history of the Indians of North America , including Comanche Moon , El Alamo , Los Tejanos and Lost Cause .
