100 bullets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

100 Bullets is the name of a comic series that began in 1999 and ended in 2009 , conceived and written by Brian Azzarello and drawn by Eduardo Risso . It contains 100 individual issues and tells the story of the Minutemen , a group of specially trained contract killers who, after betrayal by their former client, the conspiratorial organization Trust , retaliated in the form of their former leader, the shady agent Graves. The name of the series comes from the fact that in individual stories Agent Graves regularly visits people who have been treated unfairly by life. He gives them the opportunity to take revenge on those guilty of their misfortune by means of an attaché with a pistol inside, the eponymous 100 bullets and "irrefutable evidence" without having to fear criminal prosecution from official sources.

One story in the series won one of the coveted Eisner Awards in 2002, as well as a Harvey Award . In the USA the series is published by Vertigo , an imprint of DC Comics , in a total of 13 volumes. In Germany, Panini presented all volumes in translation.

style

Both the writing style and the graphic design of 100 Bullets are close to the genres Noir and Pulp : The stories are morally ambivalent and are staged in a realistic and gloomy way. Accordingly, almost all characters are flawed, turn out to be multiple murderers and prefer to pursue their own goals. The graphic representation is extremely brutal in places and does not shy away from violent images.

The series turns out to be influenced by many classics of the genre. In the film sector, these include Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs , Bryan Singers The Usual Suspects , Guy Ritchie's Jack, Dame, König, graas and Paul Thomas Anderson's Last Exit Reno . In terms of literature, authors such as Elmore Leonard , Eddie Bunker , Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler can be cited.

The realistic use of regional dialects or slangs used by Brian Azzarello is also noteworthy . The characters often use metaphorical stylistic devices to point out facts that go beyond the concrete situation. The same means is often used to receive remarks reproduced in the off as commentary for situations that are spatially and factually separated and only represented graphically.

Single volumes

The total of 100 individual issues (plus the short story "Silencer Night", which was initially published in a Vertigo themed volume) are summarized in 13 anthologies containing between five and twelve individual issues. Each volume contains one or more stories ( story arc ), which in turn extend over one to twelve issues. Typically, the title of each anthology contains a reference to the volume number ( The Counter fifth Detective, for example, is the name of the fifth volume, Strynch nine Lives is the title of the ninth). A separate cover was created for each of the individual volumes, on which Agent Graves is always more or less easy to find. In addition to the covers of the individual issues, each volume was given a specially written introduction, written by well-known comic and / or crime writers. Finally, volumes twelve and thirteen are introduced by Eduardo Risso and Brian Azzarello.

action

The plot consists of a total of 45 story arcs (56, if one ignores the chapter division in the last volume and understands the different numbers as single stories, as suggested by the different titles at least). In many stories, in addition to the main plot, there is also a side story, which often addresses poverty, drug trafficking and crime in large American cities, but leaves the actual story largely untouched. Almost all story arcs focus on one or more minutes and / or members of the trust .

Characters

Much of the plot focuses on the conflict between two groups, with the trust families directing the fate of the United States on the one hand and their former mercenary minutemen on the other. In addition, there are a number of neutral figures that cannot initially be assigned to either of the two sides or that only join them in the course of the story.
