Russ Manning

Russel George Russ Manning (born January 5, 1929 in Van Nuys , California , † December 1, 1981 in Long Beach , California) was an American comic artist .

life and work

After graduating from high school, Manning studied at the Los Angeles Art Institute. He spent his military service in Japan and Korea, where he drew comics for the Army newspaper, among others. After completing his military service in 1953, he began drawing comics for various newspapers, including for the publishing houses Dell and Gold Key . In 1963 Manning started the series Magnus - Robot Fighter , which he supervised until 1968. A year later he created Korak . In 1965 Manning was entrusted with the creation of the Tarzan albums. This was followed by the daily strips in 1967 and the Sunday pages in 1968. A few years before his death, Manning was working on the comic book adaptation of the Star Wars stories.

Numerous Mannings comics have been published in German. In addition to Korak , Magnus and Tarzan, this includes the television adventure series . The "Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award", which is presented during the celebrations of the Eisner Awards , is named after Manning .
