Gold key

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gold Key was a comic book publisher in the United States . The publishing house was founded in 1962 as an imprint by Western Publishing . In 1984 all publications were stopped.

Company history

By 1962, many Western Publishing comics were published by Dell Comics , including comics with characters from Disney , Warner Brothers, and Hanna-Barbera . After the contract with Dell expired, Western founded Gold Key, an imprint publishing company, to publish the comics there. Gold Key took over the comics from Dell. Some new draftsmen have been recruited, including the authors Don Glut , Len Wein and Mark Evanier and the draftsman Mike Royer.

Own series have also been published, such as Magnus - Robot Fighter , Turok - Son of Stone and Doktor Solar . Later there were also series of his own, as well as series on television series, including Star Trek and Twilight Zone , and comics for DePatie Freleng productions.

In the late 1970s, sales of the comics fell sharply. This led to many licensees selling their comics themselves, which caused Gold Key to lose a large part of its range. Gold Key tried in the following time to increase the sales figures with merchandising articles such as toy figures or to compensate for the loss of sales in the comics. Since this did not succeed, Gold Key was dropped by Western Publishing in 1981, most of the comics that had been published until then were then published by the imprint Whitman. In 1984 the company was finally given up.

The three series Magnus - Robot Fighter , Turok-Son of Stone and Doktor Solar were later reissued by Valiant Comics .
