Western Publishing , also known as Western Printing and Lithographing Company and between 1996 and 2001 as Golden Books Family Entertainment , was an American book and comic publisher from Racine, Wisconsin .
history
Western Publishing was founded in 1907 by Edward Henry Wadewitz and Albert H. Wadewitz in Racine. Western Publishing had a monopoly for years and was the only publisher allowed to publish Walt Disney comics in the USA. In 1993 Western Publishing had sales of $ 652.2 million. In 1996 the company was renamed Golden Books Family Entertainment . In 1998, Golden Books shares lost 98% of their value. In 1999 bankruptcy was filed for the first time. The company narrowly escaped bankruptcy in January 2000 and went bankrupt three months later. In 2001 the company was bought by United Productions of America and Random House for $ 84.4 million .
Works
Western Publishing mainly published children's books and comics. Well-known authors here were Don Rosa , Chase Craig or, from 1942, Carl Barks . Western Publishing published both Mickey and Donald comics in the United States under license from the Walt Disney Company . Disney focused on the production of films and licensed the publication of comics to publishers such as Western Publishing.
