Jack Davis (draftsman)
Jack Davis , (actually John Burton Davis), (born December 2, 1924 in Atlanta , Georgia - † July 27, 2016 in St. Simons Island , Georgia) was an American comic artist and cartoonist , who mainly through his work for the MAD- Magazine and EC Comics . Davis received the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the American National Cartoonist Society (NCS) in 1996 and the NCS Reuben Award in 2000 .
Life
Davis made his debut at the age of twelve with drawing publications in the youth magazine Tip Top Comics . During the Second World War he was a helmsman and prison guard on the island of Guam . During this time he drew the Boondocker series for Navy newspapers . After the war, Davis first enrolled in art at the University of Georgia , where he drew articles for the campus magazine Bullsheet . In 1949, he joined the Art Students League of New York. In 1951, Davis joined EC Comics , where he contributed to the publisher's horror comics, such as Vault of Horror , Tales from the Crypt , Haunt of Fear , Crime SuspenStories , Shock SuspenStories or incredible science fiction , delivered. From 1952 Davis also drew for MAD magazine . Since numerous horror comics had to be discontinued due to the restrictions of the “ Comics Code ”, Davis turned more and more to the publisher's humor publications with MAD and Panic . Further drawings were made for the satirical magazines Trump and Help! . In the years 1958 to 1963 he drew a few comics for Atlas Comics , in the mid-1960s Davis was involved in the cartoon series Little Annie Fanny for Playboy magazine . At the beginning of the 1960s he had largely withdrawn from the comic business and successfully continued his professional career as a cover artist and advertising artist. In the 1970s, Davis drew a few horror comics for Warren Publishing.
