CrossGen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CrossGeneration Comics ( CrossGen for short ) was an American comic publisher founded by Mark Alessi .

history

CrossGen started in 1998 with the publication of four series. Atypical for the American market was that CrossGen did not publish any superhero series , instead the publisher tried to make a name for itself with fantasy and science fiction- inspired comics . Although there were connecting elements among the series, crossovers, as was common with the big superhero publishers at the time, were avoided.

With CrossGen, Alessi tried to bypass the usual work-for-hire approach of the major publishers DC Comics and Marvel Comics . He signed exclusive contracts with the artists who then produced their comics at the publishing house in Florida . Initially, this plan seemed to work, and CrossGen quickly moved up to fourth place among American comic publishers. The publisher knew how to surprise its customers with innovative ideas. CrossGen was the first major comic book publisher to offer its titles online via a subscription model .

In 2003, CrossGen's facade began to crumble. Due to the initial success, more and more series were thrown onto the battered American comic market, but the sales figures fell. Reports have emerged from employees reporting the publisher's payment difficulties. In 2004, CrossGen finally went bankrupt and all series were discontinued, in part amid ongoing stories. In November 2004, Disney purchased the rights to CrossGen's series for $ 1,000,000  .

In 2011, the publisher Marvel Comics , which has meanwhile also been acquired by Disney, announced that it would publish new series under the imprint Crossgen. The first to be announced were the four-part miniseries Ruse and Sigil . After the release of another miniseries ( Mystic ), which had poor sales, the release of other announced series ( Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Route 666 ) was postponed indefinitely.

In Germany, CrossGen Comics were published by mg / publishing under the label CrossGen Comics Germany .
