Kate Beaton (born September 8, 1983 in Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian comic artist . Her best-known work is the webcomic Hark! A Vagrant .

Life

Beaton is from Nova Scotia and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and anthropology from Mount Allison University in 2005 . During her third and fourth years of college, she drew comics for the college magazine. She also worked in several museums.

Career

In 2007 Beaton posted a few of her comics online on her website, katebeaton.com , and a live journal blog. In May 2008, their website moved to their current website, Hark! A Vagrant to. The comics are drawn with the MS Paint program in a simple but expressive style.

The webcomic Hark! A Vagrant is published irregularly. Thematically historical figures, such as James Joyce or Ida B. Wells , as well as fictional characters from Western literature are dealt with. Beaton himself also appears.

Articles on Beaton have appeared in Wired , Macleans , and Comic Book Resources . In June 2009 she published the book Never Learn Anything from History . Two of Beaton's comics were published in The New Yorker magazine. Her second book followed in September 2011, Hark! A Vagrant , recommended by TIME as one of the top ten fictional books of the year. Beaton also worked on Marvel's Strange Tales anthology .

In 2015, Hark! A Vagrant as Care! Lumpenpack translated into German.

Beaton has received several awards for her work. For Never Learn Anything from History , she received the Doug Wright Award for Best Emerging Talent in 2009. Hark! A Vagrant won a total of four Harvey Awards in 2011 and 2012. She was also nominated for the Joe Shuster Award in 2009 and 2010.
