Gwendolyn Willow Wilson (born August 31, 1982 in New Jersey ) is an American author of fantasy , graphic novels and comics .

Life

Wilson studied at Boston University , where she converted to Islam , and lived in Cairo for several years . In 2007 she published her first graphic novel called Cairo , in which the fates of six people in Cairo are interwoven through a magical shisha . Her breakthrough came in 2008 with Air , which tells the story of a flight attendant named Blythe who is involved in the plans of a terrorist organization and who uncovered supernatural incidents. Air was nominated for the Eisner Award in 2009. In 2011 she wrote the book The Butterfly Mosque , in which she describes her conversion to Islam. In 2012, Wilson published her debut fantasy novel Alif the Unseen , in which an Arab hacker is drawn into a mythical dream world, and with which she won the World Fantasy Award straight away . Wilson has been writing a reinterpretation of the comic strip Ms. Marvel for Marvel Comics since 2014 : The main character is Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old American of Pakistani origin who unexpectedly comes to superpowers and brings her new talents, her happy- geeky attitude towards life and her Muslim beliefs into harmony want. For Ms. Marvel , Wilson received the Hugo Award and a second nomination for the Eisner Award.

Wilson is married to her husband Omar and has two daughters together.
