Francisco José Martínez Roca, called Paco Roca (* 1969 in Valencia ), is a Spanish comic book author .

Life and career

Roca was reading from a young comics such as Asterix and Obelix , Lieutenant Blueberry and Tintin . In addition to these comic classics, he was also influenced by the styles of comic book authors like Richard Corben , Carlos Giménez and Frank Miller . He later studied art and then initially earned his living in an advertising agency.

He belongs to a new generation of comic artists who use the graphic novel to address social issues. It is not only about historical issues such as the dictatorship and the civil war in Spain , but also current social issues. In 2007 he published the graphic novel Arrugas , which deals with dementia . For this book he received the Spanish State Prize Premio Nacional del Cómic in 2008 . For the subsequent film adaptation under the name Wrinkles he received two Goya Awards in 2012 .

On October 11, 2013, it was presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair under the German title Kopf in den Wolken in a conversation with the Tagesspiegel editor Lars von Törne and André Höchemer, who provided the German translation. In addition to this book, he presented the book Der Winter deszeichners, which was published on the German market in 2012 . Both are published by Reprodukt Verlag .

In his graphic novel Los surcos del azar (German: Die Heimatlosen , Reprodukt 2015) Roca shows a Spanish republican freedom fighter in the middle of World War II - and as an old man who looks back on that past. At the International Comics Festival in Rome there was the Gran Premio Romics in 2014 .
