history

WDR 5 went on air on October 7, 1991 on the former frequencies of WDR 1 as the new North Rhine-Westphalia wave . At that time, the old WDR 1 program was initially continued from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The broadcast day began with the local windows that can still be found today on WDR 2 , which, in contrast to today's hourly short regional news, were broadcast as separate regional magazines. Then the school radio , Echo West and the music scene West were broadcast. In the afternoon, mostly repetitions of word broadcasts from the programs WDR 2 and WDR 3 were broadcast. After 6:00 p.m., some stations took over the programs from WDR 1 or WDR 3, the other stations broadcast the program Between Bosporus and Gibraltar and then the ARD foreigner programs . At 10:20 p.m. there was a repetition of the WDR 2 show ZeitZeichen , followed by changing music programs. The ARD night express was adopted as the night program .

In 1995, based on the model of BBC Radio Four , the program was converted into a purely word-based information program with a focus on information and culture and was called WDR Radio 5 from January 1, 1995 . The final restructuring to today's word and information format took place on September 1, 1997 under the direction of the then wave boss Wolfgang Schmitz. With music in “homeopathic doses”, WDR 5 should also be audible for those “who cannot deliver their Abitur certificate when they switch on”, Schmitz said at the time. Therefore, WDR 5 officially celebrated its tenth anniversary of broadcasting in 2007.

On August 30, 1998, the sub-program WDR 5 Funkhaus Europa started on one frequency (Langenberg, 103.3 MHz), of which WDR 5 took over the “World Music Night” program produced jointly with Radio Multikulti from midnight to 6 in the morning . Since September 5, 2006, however, in response to popular requests from listeners who criticized the transition from the daily word program to the night music program, repetitions of the daily program have been broadcast ("nocturnal").

Since November 6, 2012, WDR 5 can also be heard via DAB +. With the program reform coming into effect at the beginning of 2016, which will be carried out at the same time as changes to the WDR 3 program , savings totaling 1.5 million euros are planned for the production of both program waves. In press reports it was said that ten percent of the permanent positions would be lost by 2020; In relation to WDR 5, that's ten full-time employees.

Since March 23, 2020, WDR5 has been taking over the ARD info night from MDR Aktuell from Halle, Saale for the first time .

General

The station is characterized by a very high proportion of words with cultural , scientific and current focuses in a sophisticated implementation. The small musical offer consists largely of folk, soul, chanson, Latin and sophisticated light music .

In addition to radio plays , features , service programs and a program available for children. Entertainment and comedy programs such as Strictly Public on Sunday evenings and weekend entertainment on Saturday afternoons can also be found on WDR 5.

Daily broadcasts

Current political issues are highlighted in the Echo programs with background reports. Thus, the broadcast day begins with the morning echo ( Mon - Sat 6:05 to 8:55). The midday echo (Mon – Sat 13.05–14.00, Sun 13.05–13.30) and the echo of the day (daily 6.30–19.00) are produced with NDR Info on a weekly basis . Today's reports are produced alternately with NDR Info and together with WDR 2 (Mon- Fri 11.30pm-midnight).

Hourly news (Mon-Sat between 6:00 am and 9:00 am every half hour) supplement the daily program around the clock. During the night, the news comes from the North German Broadcasting Corporation .

Magazine broadcasts in the daily program

Table Talk , a talk show in which contemporaries are interviewed, runs Wednesdays from 8 pm to 9 pm . The European magazine on Tuesday evening is the follow-up to Alte und neue Heimat . The show originally ran on Sunday morning and was renamed Eastern Europe magazine there . Pan-European issues have been taken up since the channel change and the renaming.

Weekend program

The weekend program included the discussion programs Funkhaus Wallrafplatz and Oase . Both programs on Saturday morning were discontinued or developed further in the course of several program reforms. The Saturday morning begins at 10 a.m. with the travel magazine With Curiosity on the move , which is repeated on Sundays at 4 p.m. The crime thriller on Saturday offers light entertainment and ran for years on Saturday mornings. The current slot is on Saturdays from 5 pm to 6 pm. On Saturday morning, Die Polit-WG (9–9: 45 am) offers a weekly political review. In Satire Deluxe (11 am to 12 noon) the week is viewed in a satirical manner. The media magazine Töne, Texts, Bilder (12pm – 1pm) picks up on developments in traditional and new media. On Saturday afternoon (2–3pm) everything in butter offers a glimpse of the saucepans. The radio play series takes place on Sunday afternoons, the cabaret and cabaret are entertainment on the weekend (Saturdays 3–5 p.m.) and a reading and song lounge (Sundays 8–10 p.m.).
