The Echo of the Day first went on air on October 1, 1946 and was produced by Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR). As a joint production of Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), the echo of the day was continued in 1956 after the split of NWDR in the programs of NDR 1 and WDR 1 at the time . At the beginning of the broadcast, the program was 15 minutes long and began at 6:10 p.m. and later at 7:30 p.m.

The employees of the early years included the journalists Axel Eggebrecht , Klaus Bölling , Gerd Ruge , Werner Höfer and Heinz Werner Hübner , who later became famous through the new medium of television .

Due to the technical possibilities, live reports and transfers were only rarely possible in the early days within the broadcasts. Most of the program was written and moderated by the respective editors themselves. Today, the echo of the day is also moderated by an editor and the reporters and correspondents of ARD radio report on current affairs at home and abroad. In addition, a daily comment is one of the regular items on the program. NDR Info from Hamburg and WDR 5 from Cologne produce the program on a weekly basis.
