Heinz Werner Huebner

Heinz Werner Hübner (born April 18, 1921 in Potsdam ; † August 28, 2005 on Sylt ) was a German journalist . He was television program director for West German Broadcasting for eight years .

Life

Hübner was born in Potsdam in 1921 and attended school there from 1927. In 1939 he made his Abitur in Potsdam and was then drafted into the Wehrmacht ; In 1941 he became a soldier at the front.

After the war he worked as a freelance journalist in Hamburg and as a news editor at Radio Hamburg . From April 1946 he was head of the main news department of the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation NWDR and worked on the NWDR programs "Umschau am Abend" and " Echo des Tages ". In 1954 he published the book “The Raft of the Displaced” about the end of the war in East Prussia. After the Nordwestdeutsche Rundfunk was split into the NDR and the WDR in 1955 , Huebner went to Cologne to the WDR and worked there in the main newsroom.

In 1963, Huebner switched to Deutsche Welle and worked on various television documentaries, primarily about the period between 1914 and 1945. In 1966 he returned to WDR, this time to Bonn , where he became deputy head of the WDR television studio there. From 1967 he was deputy editor-in-chief of television at WDR and during this time he moderated the ARD international magazine Weltspiegel . From July 1972 to July 1977 he was the coordinator for politics, society and culture in the ARD program management . On August 1, 1977, Hübner became television program director of WDR and thus successor to Werner Höfer . Hübner held this office until his retirement in August 1985.

One of the main achievements of Hübner was to push through the controversial TV series Holocaust - The History of the Weiss Family against public opposition, also within the ARD. With programs such as Das Boot and Heimat and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz , he has set standards in the television landscape.

In 1973, Hübner received the German " Bambi " media prize from Hubert Burda Media .
