Kirby Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kirby Awards were a short-lived set of awards for excellence in the field of comics . Their full name was called the Jack Kirby Awards , after the pioneering comic artist and comic author Jack Kirby .

The Kirby Awards were sponsored by Amazing Heroes magazine and organized by Dave Olbrich. Experts selected the winners from the nominees. The awards were first given in 1985. In 1987 there was a dispute between Olbrich and Fantagraphics (the company that published Amazing Heroes ), as both claimed ownership of the Kirby Awards. Finally a compromise was reached: From 1988 the Kirby Awards were discontinued and instead two new awards were introduced; Olbrich started giving the Eisner Awards and Fantagraphics has now given the Harvey Awards .
