Lee Falk

Lee Falk (actually: Leon Harrison Gross ; born April 28, 1911 in St. Louis , Missouri , † March 13, 1999 in New York City , New York ) was an American comic book author and illustrator. He gained particular fame through the comics Phantom and Mandrake the Magician .

life and work

Falk, who wrote school magazines in high school and college , found a job as a copywriter for an advertising agency in St. Louis after graduating from the University of Illinois . His work brought him together with Phil Davis , with whom he created the comic strip Mandrake the Magician in 1934 . The success of Mandrake the Magician , Falk's first comic book work, prompted him to start the comic series Phantom together with the illustrator Ray Moore in 1936 , which was also distributed by the King Features Syndicate .

From the 1960s onwards, Falk also worked as a novelist, writing several phantom novels. He had been a playwright before. In 1986, Falk, who was the father of three children, received the Silver T-Square from the National Cartoonists Society. He worked as a comic writer until he was nine years old.
