Phil Davis

Phil Davis (born March 4, 1906 in St. Louis , Missouri , † December 16, 1964 ) was an American comic book artist and illustrator.

life and work

While studying at Washington University Art School, Davis worked in the advertising department of a regional telephone company. In 1928 he moved to the advertising department of the St. Louis Dispatch . Together with Lee Falk , Davis created the comic strip Mandrake in 1933 , which appeared as a daily strip from June 11, 1934 . During the Second World War as an illustrator for the aircraft manufacturer Curtiss-Wright , he was supported by his wife Martha, a fashion illustrator, at Mandrake . Davis died of a heart attack in December 1964 .
