James Fullington III (born June 16, 1963 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American wrestler . He was best known under his ring name (The) Sandman .

Fullington has several university degrees and successful companies. James Fullington is also the father of children: Kelly (1987), Tyler (1989) and Oliver (1994). Since 2008 he has been the father of another daughter who he has with his girlfriend.

Career

NWA Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (1992)

In early 1992, Jim Fullington began his wrestling career with a surfer gimmick in small independent leagues. When Fullington entered the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance a little later under the pseudonym Mr. Sandman , he was able to gain his first experience in a major promotion.

NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling (1992-1998)

In April 1992 he joined the NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling after the sale of the TWA to Tod Gordon . After the league was renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling , Fullington's ring character took on its final forms under his manager, Woman . He was now called The Sandman and this ring character hardly changed in the following years. Jim Fullington came into the hall smoking (although smoking was strictly prohibited at all wrestling events!) And was already drinking beer on his way into the ring. In the beginning it was bottled and later canned beer. He then hit the cans on his forehead. Therefore, Fullington was already bleeding before a match. Another hallmark of his gimmick was the kendo stick , which Fullington called the “Singapore Cane”. James Fullington used the song "Enter Sandman" by Metallica as entrance or entrance music and came mostly through the rows of spectators to the ring.

In the ECW, Fullington impressed above all with his increasingly brutal wrestling style. Like most ECW wrestlers, he also loved the use of so-called "illegal weapons" (steel ring posts and barriers, folding chairs, tables, barbed wire, traffic signs or anything else that he could "dust off" from the audience). After the matches, Fullington went out of the hall again, smoking and drinking beer.

He had one of his first major feuds against Tommy Dreamer . He had also joined the ECW in 1992 and was often attacked by Fullington. After winning a match against Dreamer, Fullington beat him so much with his kendo stick that Dreamer left the ring with a bloodied and completely bruised back. This feud was actually concluded. But when Dreamer attacked Fullington with his stick a little later, a terrible accident happened: Dreamer accidentally knocked out Fullingtion almost one eye and injured the other eye so badly that Fullington threatened to go blind. Fullington was admitted to the hospital and afterwards no one was officially available for another four weeks. In the meantime, however, Paul Heyman had managed to contact Jim Fullington and they both worked out a memorable angle: Tommy Dreamer should apologize to Fullington in the ECW arena to the Sandman. Fullington came into the ring with his manager Woman , also accepting Dreamer's apology. Then Fullington tore the blindfold off his eyes and attacked Tommy Dreamer in turn. This marked the comeback of Fullington.

In the late summer of 1995, Fullington led a brutal feud with extreme superstar Steve Austin , who had just come to the ECW from World Championship Wrestling. Jim Fullington remained in the ECW until the end of 1998.

World Championship Wrestling (1999)

In early 1999, Fullington moved to the World Championship Wrestling , as this league could pay him a better salary. He started there under the name Hak and hoped to be built into a superstar like Hulk Hogan from WCW. But Fullington had to abandon the essential features of his old ECW character in the WCW: He was no longer allowed to smoke, drink beer or use his kendo stick. Instead, he came to the ring with a piece of "barbed wire". He only stayed that way until the end of the year.

Extreme Championship Wrestling (1999-2001)

But Jim Fullington's expectations were not met in the WCW as he had hoped. And so he returned to the ECW at the end of 1999 and stayed there until its glorious end in the summer of 2001. The feud with Scott Levy , who played the role of super heel as "Raven" there , was particularly legendary . So this Jim Fullington's ex-wife "pulled" Lori and above all Sandman's son , the then six-year-old Tylor, to his side. Levy wanted to re-educate Tylor to be a "little Raven" ( he's a little Raven, Fullington! ). It was also when the ECW had its highest ratings because it was the most emotional feud the ECW had ever built: the audience saw James Fullington physically collapse and cry.

World Wrestling Federation (2001)

After the end of the ECW, Fullington took part in the so-called " WCW / ECW Invasion " in the WWF. However, he only took part in a single match as a "tag team" with Tommy Dreamer. However, after it quickly became apparent that the ECW and WCWers were only supposed to play the "windfall" for their stars in the WWF (these "defeats" were justified by the fact that the rings between the former ECW, WCW and WWF were of different sizes), he turned his back on the WWF in June 2001.

Independent (2001-2003)

After his departure from the WWF, Jim Fullington took part in an event in the former ECW arena, the old “Viking Hall”, which was called “Main-Event Championship Wrestling / MECW”. This was organized by wrestler Curt Hennig (the "Mr. Perfect" of the WWF) , among others . (This was due to illness shortly before a WWF title match for the "WWF Intercontinental Championship" title due to a back injury and was dismissed a little later for breach of contract.) All wrestlers of the former WCW and ECW performed there, either from the WWF had not received a contract or did not want to join. Sabu (ECW), Tommy Dreamer (ECW) and Raven (ECW), but also Hulk Hogan (WCW), Randy Savage (WCW) and Lex Luger also took part in this unique event, which fully met all the expectations of the former ECW fans (WCW), Brian Adams (WCW), Sting (WCW) and Rowdy Roddy Piper (WWF) took part.
Then Jim Fullington was signed briefly by two Japanese leagues.

After their contract expired, Fullington returned to the USA in 2001, where he was signed by Xtreme Pro Wrestling (XPW). In 2002, Fullington signed with the League Pro-Pain Pro-Wrestling (3PW), whose contract was replaced by the new League NWA / TNA Wrestling . James Fullington slowly lost interest in wrestling and now withdrew from active wrestling. Nevertheless, Fullington later took part in an event of the German wrestling league "wXw".

In 2003 Fullington took part in a wrestling tournament hosted by the IWA . There he competed against "Sick" Nick Mondo .

Total Nonstop Action (2003-2004)

Fullington made a surprise debut in February 2003 at TNA, where he faced and lost against Raven . For the next several months he denied feuds against other hardcore icons and former ECW comrades like Sabu , New Jack and Mike Awesome. In February 2004, Fullington played his last fight and then turned his back on TNA .

World Wrestling Entertainment (2005-2007)

In 2005 he took part in the ECW One Night Stand and from 2006 he was an integral part of the newly founded ECW roster of the WWE. On June 17, 2007, he was unexpectedly sent to RAW as part of the Draft Lottery . After that there were only insignificant appearances, mostly in the B-Show " Heat ". On September 11, 2007, Fullington was dismissed from the WWE after his former ECW colleagues Sabu and Rob Van Dam had already ended their cooperation with the WWE in the course of the year.

Independent (2007-2009)

After his sudden discharge from the WWE, Jim Fullington signed a short-term contract with the wrestling promotion Extreme Wrestling Federation . In January 2008 he took part in a wrestling tournament for this promotion. Fullington also appeared in smaller Indy leagues, where he was only signed for individual matches. In October 2008, Fullington announced that he was finally retiring from wrestling, thereby ending his career. Nevertheless, in 2009 he was still in the ring for various independent promotions and competed in both America and Europe.

Total Nonstop Action (2010)

Fullington returned to TNA in July 2010 as part of the pay-per-view Hardcore Justice . Here he had a brief feud with PJ Polaco ( Justin Credible ), which however did not lead to a match. In August 2010, Fullington was named Impact! offered a contract by Dixie Carter . In the weeks that followed, Fullington stopped appearing on TNA and has not appeared there since.

Independent (since 2010)

Since leaving TNA , Fullington has appeared sporadically in independent leagues.

In February 2014, he played a tag team match with his son Tyler Fullington. In November 2018, Fullington lost to Silas Young at the Ring of Honor .
