Gengoroh Tagame ( Japanese 田 亀 源五郎; Gengorō Tagame ; born February 3, 1964 ) is a Japanese gay manga writer .

Gengoroh Tagame studied at the Tama Art School in Tokyo . His works tell stories from the gay BDSM area. His characters are mostly hyper-masculine, often bears . The characters include men who suffer and enjoy physical and mental oppression.

As a student in 1982, he published his first works. However, he only used the name since 1986. After a few jobs, he started working as a freelance artist in 1994. He has published a total of 19 comics so far, all in Japanese. He also produced a two-volume book on Japanese gay art. His works have been shown in exhibitions in France and Spain.

Few of his works have been translated into European languages. This includes his manga Gunji , which was published in French by H&O Editions in 2005 and in English by Bruno Gmünder Verlag in 2014 . Also in French was Arena in 2006 and Goku in 2009. Virtus was published in Italian. In 2013, Endless Games was published in English by Bruno Gmünder Verlag. The same house published Gunji , Fisherman's Lodge (both 2014) and The Contracts of the Fall (2015) in English.
