Jill Thompson (born November 20, 1966 ) is an American comic book artist , author and illustrator . Her best-known works are the characters for Neil Gaiman's Sandman and her own Scary Godmother series. She also worked on Swamp Thing , Wonder Woman and for stage, film and television productions.

Life

Thompson grew up in Forest Park, Illinois . She attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago , from which she graduated in 1987 with a diploma in illustration and watercolor . Thompson also studied improvisational theater at the Players Workshop and The Second City Training Center in Chicago and performed with the Cleveland Improv Troupe for four years .

After initially working for smaller publishers such as Comico and First Comics , she was one of the first women to be entrusted by DC Comics with the drawings for the Wonder Woman series. For the Sandman comics, Thompson illustrated the story arc The Sandman - Brief Lives (Issues 41-49) and the short story "The Parliament of Rooks" (separate issue 40) in The Sandman - Fables and Reflections . Since then, she has written and drawn several stories using the characters from the Sandman comics, such as the manga- style Death: At Death's Door (one of DC Comics' best-selling books in 2003) and The Little Endless Storybook , a kid-friendly version of the The Endless comic series . In 2005, Thompson wrote and illustrated the Dead Boy Detectives , a short story based on two minor characters from the Sandman comic book The Sandman - Season of Mists .

Thompson also created the costumes for WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan .

With Scary Godmother , Thompson created her own comic book series, which was first published by Sirius Entertainment and then by Dark Horse Comics . The books were the template for two CGI- animated TV specials in which Thompson had a creative say: Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktacular , which was shown abroad in 2003 before it was broadcast on Cartoon Network in 2004, and Scary Godmother 2: The Revenge of Jimmy in 2005 .

For her work, Thompson took herself as a model for some characters, the best known being the original Scary Godmother , but she was also a model for other comic artists. She was the model for protagonists from The Magic Flute , the Story Hothouse from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and other works by Philip Craig Russell as well as for Alex Ross's character Duela Dent in Kingdom Come .

The 2005 documentary Ringers: Lord of the Fans about The Lord of the Rings fan base contains an extended interview with Thompson.

Thompson is married to comic book writer Brian Azzarello .
