Allan "Al" Jaffee (* as Abraham Jaffee , March 13, 1921 in Savannah , Georgia ) is an American cartoonist , best known for his work for MAD magazine .

Life

Jaffee is the son of Mildred and Morris Jaffee. He spent five years of his childhood in Zarasai , his mother's hometown in Lithuania . In 1933 his father brought him back to the USA. During the Second World War he joined the US armed forces and worked there primarily on the drafting of building floor plans. He used the free choice of name in the army to have his first name changed to the less ethnic-sounding Allan .

He began his career in 1941 as a draftsman and copywriter for Inferior Man in Quality Comics and later in Marvel Comics . For MAD he pushed 1955. 1964 he invented the MAD-sheet (or in American Fold-in based on the fold-out of the Playboy ). The leaflet, which always appeared on the inside of the back cover sheet, is an image that only gives a more or less meaningless answer to a given question. However, if you hide the middle part by folding the page, a new hidden picture emerges and an often funny answer. The leaflet is still an integral part of the MAD today . In the German edition it was also drawn a couple of times by Ivica Astalos .

In addition, Jaffee made many other contributions both as a draftsman and as a copywriter. This includes the well-known clever answers to stupid questions and articles about fictional inventions that actually made it into series production a few years later.

Today Jaffee works for advertising and illustrates children's books, but also appears in the MAD , of which he is now the oldest artist. At the end of 2000, it made it into the 400th US edition, beating everyone else.
