Early work by Gerstein

In addition to his well-known metal wall sculptures, Gerstein's work also includes smaller objects, paintings, graphics and huge sculptures and objects in public spaces. The children in Jerusalem enjoy his art in the form of a playground in Park Weil.

In his multi-layered works, the boundary between the two-dimensional painting and the three-dimensional sculpture becomes blurred. Above all, his works impress with their lively colors. Most often people find themselves in motion as the central theme of his sculptures and objects. But nature and urbanity also play a major role in his work. His works are influenced both biographically and by the environment in his hometown.

When Gerstein returned to Israel from America in the early 1970s, minimalism and conceptualism dominated:

"When I returned from New York I was still very young. I immediately began teaching at Bezalel and I had to make a crucial decision for myself as an artist: should I turn to what is popular and accepted, meaning the minimalist, conceptual approaches, or go my own way and be less popular, for the moment at least. " , accessed August 22, 2008

He decided against the popular styles.
