Spain Rodriguez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez (born March 22, 1940 in Buffalo , New York ; † November 28, 2012 in San Francisco , California ) was an American underground comix - illustrator and writer . He became known with his series Trashman , which arose from Spain's experiences as a biker and a member of the Road Vultures as well as his countercultural and radical left-wing attitudes.

Life

Spain Rodriguez studied at the Silvermine Guild Art School in Connecticut . In the late 1960s he was able to work for the New York city newspaper East Village Other , which in 1968 produced its own comic strip in newspaper format with Zodiac Mindwarp .

Rodriguez co-founded the United Cartoon Workers of America and has contributed to countless comixes. He also drew Salon's comic book series The Dark Hotel .

His style was originally very much influenced by Wally Wood , but it changed in a more expressive and simpler direction, he adopted Wood's eroticism, which he sometimes intensified, for example in the classic story Mean Bitch Thrills . Spain's women are not overly reserved and more macho, sadomasochism plays a certain role.

In 2009 he illustrated Che's biography , Che: A Graphic Biography . Art Spiegelman called the result brilliant and radical .
