Sheldon Mayer (born April 1, 1917 in New York City , † December 21, 1991 ) was an American comic book author and illustrator.

Life and work

Mayer began working for the Fleischer brothers' animation studio and for the McClure Syndicate in the 1930s, before taking on a post as editor at All-American Publications in the early 1940s. In the following years he worked at All Star Comics on the development of numerous comic characters, to a large extent known and popular to this day, including Flash , Green Lantern , Hawkman and the Justice Society of America .

After Mayer gave up his career as an editor in 1949, he began to concentrate on writing and drawing humorous comic stories for the publishing house National Periodicals. His best known works from this phase are The Three Mouseketeers and - in the late 1950s - Sugar and Spike . There was also the semi-autobiographical series Scribbly , which dealt with the adventures of a young illustrator. In the 1970s Mayer created the character Black Orchid and also contributed drawings for various horror and mystery comics, whereby his working capacity gradually decreased due to a cataractic eye disease .
