The incal

John Difool is a class R private detective in a gigantic shaft city on the Earth-like planet Terra 21 of the humano-galaxy. After an unsuccessful order, he receives an incal , a small object in the form of a glowing pyramid, from a dying mutant . Alien berks, mutants, and the president of the planet are now hunting for the incal. In the Techno-Town corpse recycling factory , Difool reaches the black Incal , the counterpart. After Techno-Town fell apart, Difool hands over the Incal to Animah . The president, overrun by the revolutionaries in the city, mutates into a necro-probe , a killing machine. He pursues Difool and his companions underground. There they meet again Animah and walk to the heart of the sun , the spiritual center of the planet. The seven companions now form a starship with Soluna, Difool's son, as “consciousness”.

On the aquatic planet Aquaend, they train mutated giant medusas to fight thousands of shadow eggs from techno-technicians. At the same time, Difool manages to fertilize the proto-queen in the Berk realm. The techno-centographer is holed up on the war star and can be defeated in a tricky manner, after which Soluna is promoted to the new head of the galaxy. He suggests falling into Teta sleep, only in this way can the darkness be conquered. However, 78 trillion living beings, the descendants of Difool, reject it. However, the proto-queen Barbarah appears to the hateful Jide eggs and can convince the crowd of Teta sleep. In a final spiritual journey, Difool meets Orh , the creator of time and space. He advises him to remember.

Before the incal

The young John Difool is the son of a prostitute and a petty criminal in the overcrowded city on Terra 2014. When he becomes friends with a robot, he involuntarily becomes an informant and receives a license to become a private detective candidate class R. To become a detective, however, he still has to solve an unsolved riddle . He tries to find out why prostitutes do not have children and can determine that those babies are used to make the halos of the Aristo upper class and die in the process. During his work he got to know and love Aristo Louz de Garra . He fathered his son Soluna at Animah, who was disguised as a prostitute.

The last incal

The last cloning of the President was the metallic Mecha-Praesi, which is controlled by the huge benthacodon . It releases a biofress virus throughout the universe and wants to usher in a metallic age. So all humans must be transformed into metal beings. The pure love between John Difool and Louz de Garra could defeat the Praesi and give people back their bio-bodies.

publication

The actual Incal cycle was published by Les Humanoïdes Associés between 1981 and 1988 with drawings by Moebius and coloring by Yves Chaland (volumes 1 and 2), Isabelle Beaumenay-Joannet (volumes 3 and 4) and Zoran Janjetov (volumes 5 and 6).

This was followed by the series John Difool before the Incal ( Avant L'Incal ), which was drawn by Zoran Janjetov. There is also the single volume After the Katharsis with drawings by Moebius. The continuation was canceled because Jodorowsky was not satisfied. A new, now three-part version was then drawn by José Ladrönn as Final Incal . This was published in German from March 2009 to 2014.

Work and effect

The Incal series is typical of the 80s, it spreads a genre and topic mix of social criticism and esoteric , science fiction and crime , fairy tales and adventure and love stories . In addition, it is full of cosmic madness, the twists and turns of history and the confusion of the overflowing staff are significant. The incal is rich in detail, weird and uniquely funny. Ridley Scott was inspired by this vision of the future for his film Blade Runner , Luc Besson for The Fifth Element .
