Miguel Berrocal
Miguel Ortiz Berrocal (born September 28, 1933 in Algaidas , Province of Málaga , Andalusia , † May 31, 2006 in Antequera , Spain ) was a Spanish sculptor . He is best known for his small sculptures , the so-called “puzzle sculptures”.
life and work
Miguel Ortiz Berrocal was married to Maria Cristina Blais of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Braganza, the daughter of Maria Pia of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Braganza .
He studied mathematics and architecture at the University of Madrid , later art in Paris and Rome , before settling in Negrar , near Verona . At the end of the 1950s, Berrocal began making metal puzzle sculptures . He created his first demountable sculpture in 1959. With these special, rather small sculptures, he gained international attention, including taking part in documenta III in Kassel in 1964. His work shows influences from Eduardo Chillida . His sculptures are part of international collections, for example the Museum of Modern Art in New York City .
Miguel Ortiz y Berrocal died of prostate cancer in Antequera in 2006 .
