Daniel Traub

Daniel Traub (born October 25, 1909 in Breslau ; † June 17, 1995 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Live and act

In 1924 he came to Mülheim an der Ruhr with his parents, where his father Karl Friedrich Traub took up a position as a preacher in the Baptist community. After graduating from school, Daniel Traub first studied at the Folkwang University in Essen , then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.

He earned his living not only with classic landscape paintings and portraits, but also with painting theater sets , school buildings and art in architecture. The ceramic paintings in the subway shafts of the Mülheim main station are among his most famous works. Daniel Traub also designed the door reveals of the historic town hall of Mülheim or the door reveals of the Brothers Grimm School with mosaic work. The Mülheimer Kunstverein and Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr was able to secure parts of these door reveals after the demolition in 2018 in order to preserve them for the public.

In 1963, Traub was awarded the Ruhr Prize for Art and Science from the city of Mülheim, and in 1980 he received the honorary “Jobs” award from the Mülheim civil society Mausefalle for his services as an artistic city chronicler. On his 75th birthday in 1984, the city art museum honored him with a comprehensive exhibition.

Daniel Traub was a co-founder of the Mülheim Artists' Working Group.

Exhibitions and collections

The artist's early work includes countless woodcuts and sketches that Traub created on his many travels. Traub illustrated diaries and writings that make up a focus of today's collection of the artist's family.

In 2019, the Mülheimer Galerie an der Ruhr showed a comprehensive retrospective of Daniel Traub's work in collaboration with family members of the artist, collectors, the Mülheim City Art Museum and the Mülheimer Kunstverein und Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr (KKRR).
