History, architecture and exterior objects
The history of the Galerie an der Ruhr is related to the construction of similar buildings in Düsseldorf such as B. the picture gallery . The steel emblem of Oskar Natorp's industrial family, which was created around 1900, hangs above the entrance to the building of the Galerie an der Ruhr. After decades of use as a residential and administrative building, the then Mülheimer Gesellschaft für Stromwirtschaft e. G. 2012 the building in order to enable the use as an art house again. Originally, the building on Ruhrstr. 3 together with the neighboring building Ruhrstr. 5 the headquarters of Tengelmann Warenhandelsgesellschaft KG with the residence of the company's founder Wilhelm Schmitz . The company founder Ludwig Lindgens also lived in the entrepreneur's villa on the banks of the Ruhr in Mülheim until 1862.
The Kunstverein und Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr (KKRR) branch has been located in the side wing of the villa since 2012.
