Manfred Theodor Reetz (born August 13, 1943 in Hirschberg , Silesia ) is a German chemist and professor of organic chemistry.

life and work

Reetz studied chemistry at Washington University (Bachelor) and University of Michigan (Master). In 1969 he received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen under Ulrich Schöllkopf . After he had been postdoctoral researcher at the University of Marburg with Reinhard W. Hoffmann in 1971/72 , he completed his habilitation there in 1974. He was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA). In 1978 he became a professor at the University of Bonn . Reetz was professor at the University of Marburg from 1980 to 1991. Reetz then moved to the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr as Director , where he decisively determined the structures; at the same time, he has been honorary professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum since 1992 . In 1995, Reetz was Vice President of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh). Since 2011 he has held the Hans Meerwein Research Professorship at the Philipps University of Marburg . He is also an external group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research.

Scholarships and Awards (selection)

Shortly after completing his habilitation, Reetz was awarded the lecturer's scholarship from the Chemical Industry Fund in the Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI), which is highly regarded in specialist circles . He was also honored with the Chemistry Prize of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Otto Bayer Prize of Bayer AG . In 1989, the German Research Foundation awarded Reetz the high-ranking Leibniz Prize of the DFG . In 2002 he was awarded the Centenary Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry in London , UK. The Karl Ziegler Prize of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) was awarded to Reetz in 2005. In 2007 he received the Ruhr Prize for Art and Science . Reetz was appointed as a member of several scientific academies: German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (in 1997), North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . In addition, Reetz has been Professor hc at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry in China since 2007 . In 2011 he received the Otto Hahn Prize, endowed with € 50,000, for his work on catalysis , and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2011 he received the Tetrahedron Prize .

Manfred Reetz was awarded the renowned Japanese IKCOC Prize in 2012. This prize, which is worth 1,000,000 yen (around 10,000 euros), is awarded every three years to internationally renowned scientists specializing in organic chemistry. The honor was presented at the "Twelfth International Kyoto Conference on New Aspects of Organic Chemistry" (IKCOC-12) in Kyoto . For 2020 he was awarded the Blaise Pascal Medal .
