Carl Altena

Carl Altena (born April 17, 1894 in Courl , now Dortmund-Kurl, † February 5, 1971 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a German painter .

Live and act

After graduating from school in Oberhausen , Altena attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1912 . In 1914 he was drafted into the war and in 1917 was taken prisoner by the English . After his release he settled in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1919, where he found a job as a graphic designer at Gutehoffnungshütte . In 1925 he started his own business and from then on worked as a freelance artist.

In 1939 he was drafted again as a soldier and returned to Mülheim from the hospital in 1945. After the war he received various commissions for the artistic design of buildings ("art in building"). His work includes the ceiling and wall paintings in the Mülheim town hall library, in the former Sparkasse building and in various Mülheim schools. The main theme of his works were views of the city of Mülheim and the Ruhr valley.
