Borislav Bogdanović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Борислав Богдановић ; born June 3, 1934 in Novi Sad , Yugoslavia ; † September 11, 2010 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a Yugoslav or Serbian chemist.

Life

Bogdanović studied chemistry from 1953 to 1959 at the University of Belgrade , where he graduated with a diploma. He received his doctorate from RWTH Aachen University in 1962. He then moved to the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research . In Günther Wilke's group he worked on the research of nickel complexes and was involved in the first preparation of bis (π-allyl) nickel (Ni (η 3 -C 3 H 5 ) 2 ). After his habilitation in 1974, he taught at the Ruhr University in Bochum and as a visiting professor at the universities of Pisa , Paris-Süd , Toulouse and Lyon . He later headed the catalyst research group at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr , where he retired in 1999.

The focus of his research was in the field of organometallic chemistry , especially the application of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage as well as research into organometallic complexes such as magnesium anthracene , also known as Bogdanović magnesium. Magnesium anthracene is used to produce magnesium hydride . While the synthesis from the elements requires high pressures of 200 bar and temperatures of 500 ° C, the synthesis according to Bogdanović takes place under mild conditions.

Bogdanović has received numerous prizes and awards, such as the Ruhr Prize for Art and Science (1986) and the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize .
