Manfred Cordes

Manfred Cordes (* 1953 ) is a German musician. He is professor for music theory , counterpoint , ensemble and was dean and rector of the Bremen University of the Arts .

Cordes is a specialist in the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. As the director of the Ensemble Weser-Renaissance Bremen , founded in 1993, he designed and directed a large number of concert programs, which received great attention both in Germany and at international festivals.

Life

Manfred Cordes studied school and church music in Hanover and Berlin . After studying classical philology and singing pedagogy , a guest lecturer for music theory followed in Groningen . Cordes received his doctorate in 1991 with a thesis on the key and affect theory of the Renaissance .

Since 1983 in Bremen , Cordes took over the vocal ensemble of the Forum Alte Musik Bremen and began extensive concert activities with him. The Ensemble Weser-Renaissance Bremen was formed through further specialization in the repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries as well as the use of historical instruments , which in the 25th year of its existence has received numerous concert and CD programs, international invitations and prominent performances looks back.

As a lecturer for music theory, counterpoint and ensemble, Manfred Cordes was involved in founding the Academy for Early Music in Bremen in 1986 . In 1994 he was appointed professor at the Bremen University of the Arts. There he was Dean of the Music Department until 2005. From 2007 to 2012 he was rector of the university.

Cordes was a member of the board of directors of the International Heinrich Schütz Society and was deputy chairman of the rectors' conference of the music academies . He works on the board of directors of the Arp Schnitger Institute for Organ and Organ Building at the HfK.

Projects

Since the year 2000 Cordes has been holding a series of concerts in Bremen with the Ensemble Weser-Renaissance in cooperation with the University of the Arts.

In addition, he has pursued international concert activities in recent years at festivals in Utrecht (Holland Festival), Herne (Days of Early Music / WDR), Halle (Handel Festival), Gothenburg, Helsinki (Baroque Week), Innsbruck, Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent ( Festival van Vlaanderen ), Dresden, Munich, Regensburg (Days of Early Music) or Hamburg (Das Alte Werk / NDR ). With the Hanseatic city of Bremen as the "homebase", work on and with historical organ instruments from Northern Europe has recently become a further focus.

Cordes is the initiator and artistic director of the European Hanse Ensemble.
