Research and dissemination of the works

The society was founded in 1993 at Rathgeber's birthplace in Oberelsbach, initially as a development association and renamed the International Valentin-Rathgeber-Society on March 9, 2002 . It is organized as a registered association and is managed by an honorary board. Membership is free and not tied to any particular status. The association has committed itself in particular to the care of Rathgeber's instrumental and choral music. In doing so, she tries to enrich cultural life. This is accompanied by research into the biography of the teacher, cantor and monastery composer Valentin Rathgeber.

Of the 485 works by Rathgeber that have survived in print, only a few have been published. The company made copies of all printed works. All works were only available in individual part books, not in scores, which is why most libraries only had an incomplete set of parts. After several years of detailed research and with the help of librarians and musicologists , it was possible to make copies of all available prints by Rathgeber, so that now the only complete compilation of Rathgeber's printed works worldwide is available for further research and editing projects in Valentin Rathgeber's birthplace.

In a second step, the company has started to adapt the works for today's performance practice and to publish them itself. In addition, further publications and sound carriers about Valentin Rathgeber are available in the online shop.

Valentin Rathgeber Foundation

The Valentin-Rathgeber-Foundation was founded on December 16, 2009 to preserve Rathgeber's work. The government of Lower Franconia recognized them as having legal capacity according to §§ 80, 81 BGB. The purpose of the foundation is to promote research into life and work, as well as the preservation and dissemination of the musical work of the baroque composer Rathgeber.

The foundation dedicates its income in particular to new editions, scientific papers and concerts. It also promotes documentation about the life and work of Johann Valentin Rathgeber through exhibits, information leaflets and by furnishing the Rathgeber room in the Valentin-Rathgeber-Haus, Rathgeber's birthplace. The proceeds from the sale of the sheet music are used to support the Rathgeber Foundation's special account.

Traveling exhibition

The association has been organizing a Valentin Rathgeber traveling exhibition since 2007 . Life - work - meaning . In it, the person of Rathgeber is pursued in various subject areas. Rathgeber not only created a new personal style that brought lightness, brevity and loveliness together in a successful synthesis, but also had an ear for his addressees in addition to his future-oriented orientation. He created appealing vocal music, especially for smaller ensembles, which is valued and cultivated to this day. Rathgeber was active throughout Europe and found sponsors in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary who supported him in the publication of his works.

The following topics are dealt with on a total of 25 boards, in two showcases and using several free-standing exhibits: characterization of the age, place of birth and youth, time in Würzburg, time in Banz, Rathgeber's advertising tour, patrons and patrons, Rathgeber's music, Rathgeber Renaissance. Audio guides provide an overview of Rathgeber's music. An exhibition catalog describes the individual subject areas and provides a lot of additional information.
