Christa Stewens (born August 27, 1945 in Altötting ) is a German politician . As a member of the CSU , she was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament between October 1994 and October 2013 . From 1998 to 2008 she was a member of the Bavarian State Government in various functions and from 2007 to 2008 she was also Deputy Prime Minister in Bavaria. In 2013 she was elected chairman of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament, before being replaced by Thomas Kreuzer in October 2013 .

education and profession

After attending the Maria Ward Realgymnasium in Nymphenburg from 1956 to 1965, Christa Stewens worked in an architecture office until 1967. She then worked as a housewife .

Political offices

From 1978 to 2002 she was a councilor and temporarily second mayor in her home town of Poing , later also as a district councilor in the district of Ebersberg , from 1980 to 1990 she was the environmental policy spokesperson for the CSU district parliamentary group . From 1990 to 1994 she was Upper Bavarian District Councilor and until 2003 the parliamentary group leader of the CSU district assembly in Ebersberg.

Since 1994 she has been a constituency member of Ebersberg ( Upper Bavaria ) and a member of the Bavarian state parliament. From 1994 to 1998 she was consumer policy spokeswoman for the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament and a member of the committees for municipal issues and internal security , state development and environmental issues, as well as in the genetic engineering working group .

From 1998 to 2001 she worked as State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Issues and was also a (deputy) member of the Federal Council .

In January 2001 she was appointed Bavarian State Minister for Labor and Social Affairs, Family and Women . In October 2007 she made Prime Minister Günther Beckstein his deputy.

She was not reappointed to the state government by Prime Minister Horst Seehofer and therefore resigned from it in October 2008.

On April 26, 2013, Stewens succeeded the CSU parliamentary group leader in the state parliament, Georg Schmid , who had recently resigned from his post in the wake of the relatives affair. After the state election won for the CSU, she was replaced in office by Thomas Kreuzer in October 2013. She was the first female CSU parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian state parliament.

In 1972 she joined the CSU. In 1975 she became the first female JU district chairwoman in Bavaria, a position she held until 1977. Since 2001 she has been a member of the party executive committee and deputy state chairwoman of the working group on the environment , from 2003 to 2011 district chairwoman of the CSU Ebersberg.

Since 1980 she has been chairwoman of the athletics community in Sempt .

In 1997 she was elected for the first time as honorary chairwoman of the Bavarian Red Cross in the district association Ebersberg , the re-elections valid for four years took place in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017. In 2009 she was also elected chairwoman of the district association of Upper Bavaria of the Bavarian Red Cross , Re-elected in 2013 and 2017.

In 2006, as Minister for Health and Care, she took over the patronage of the Foundation Ambulantes Kinderhospiz München-AKM, which provides multi-professional care for families across Bavaria with life-threatening seriously ill unborn babies, newborns, children, adolescents and young adults. The patronage of the AKM Foundation applies for the term of office of the incumbent minister for health and care. In 2008 Christa Stewens handed the patronage over to Christine Haderthauer , which she passed on to Melanie Huml in 2013 . Christa Stewens has been an active member of the board of trustees of the AKM Foundation since 2008 and is intensely committed to the needs of affected families. She is also a member of the board of trustees of the children's aid organization Plan International Germany .

Christa Stewens' grandfather was the German chemist and Secretary General of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and later of the Max Planck Society Ernst Telschow . In 1965 she married Martin Stewens. The couple have six children and 24 grandchildren.
