The Sempt is an approximately 46 km long right tributary of the Isar , which flows into the Middle Isar Canal between Moosburg and Landshut .

course

Underpass of the Sempt under the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal

The Sempt arises near Ottenhofen from the confluence of the Anzinger Sempt and the shorter Forstinninger Sempt. It is strongly fed by groundwater from the gravel plain, so that it is relatively cool in summer with rarely more than 17 ° C, but it does not freeze in winter.

The most important tributary is the Strogen , which flows into Moosburg . In Wörth which opens Schwillach in the Sempt. For mountain fans, the Sempt runs under the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal and finally flows into it between the compensation pond and the Echinger reservoir .

Important places on the Sempt are Markt Schwaben , Erding , Langenpreising , Moosburg and Eching near Landshut . The mean annual discharge is around 2.39 m³ / s.

Fehlbach

In Erding the Fehlbach branches off from the Sempt. Sempt and Fehlbach formed a natural moat around the old town of Erding.

On the one hand, the Fehlbach flows as the Eittinger Fehlbach in Eitting into the Middle Isar Canal; with the branch called Saubach , it is led under the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal by Berglern into the Sempt-Flutkanal , which flows into the Isar.

Ecology and water quality

Anzinger Sempt south of Markt Schwaben

The catchment area of the Sempt is mainly used for agriculture and leads to the input of removed topsoil and nutrients. This can also be seen in the composition of the aquatic plants and diatoms. The Sempt is not a good habitat for fish, not only because of the many transverse structures that hinder their migration. About half of the course has been straightened and therefore has constant depth, current and river bed. The bank is paved in many areas, only about half of the course is close to nature. The grayling is critically endangered and the nose is extinct.

According to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Sempt is divided into two aquatic ecological sections, the upper and lower reaches. Both clearly fail to achieve the “good ecological status” sought by the WFD.
