The Echinger reservoir is a reservoir near Eching in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut .

location

The Echinger reservoir is located in the west of Eching and is fed by the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal . The Isar flows north past the reservoir.

history

The Echinger reservoir, which was dammed up in 1929, forms the end link of the Mittlere Isar power station staircase , which was built from 1921 to 1929 as part of state-funded emergency measures between Munich and Landshut to generate electricity. The water of the canal system is first diverted from the Isar at Oberföhring and flows back into the Isar after a chain of hydroelectric power stations below the Echinger reservoir. The two Uppenborn factories located on the Middle Isar reservoirs generate around 150 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

In 1982 the middle Isar reservoirs bird sanctuary was created, which includes the Moosburger reservoir , which is still in Upper Bavaria , and the Echinger reservoir. The hunt for waterfowl, which usually takes place every two weeks, was only banned in 1995 by an amendment to the nature reserve ordinance.

description

The Echinger reservoir has an area of 112 hectares and is only about two meters deep. It is bounded in the north by the adjacent floodplains and in the south by a drainage ditch.

Last but not least, the reservoir has the task of compensating for major fluctuations in the amount of water to be returned to the Isar, so that the plant water flows evenly back into the Isar bed via the Uppenborn II power plant. Among other things, this function results in the relatively clearly changing water levels in the lake. In addition, the operator of the reservoirs and power plants, Stadtwerke München (SWM), is obliged to store around 1.5 million cubic meters of water on a weekly basis. Therefore, large areas usually fall dry early in the morning with the formation of mud and silt areas.

In the last century, the lake was a highly nutrient-rich body of water due to wastewater pollution from the greater Munich area. A third of it is made of reeds. The water depths are shallow in most areas, only the Middle Isar Canal running in the middle of the lake is several meters deep.

Due to the fluctuating water level, combined with the permanent flow through the lake, the water surface only freezes in very severe winters. Even at −10 ° C, a maximum of 30% of the water surface is frozen. This is a great advantage for the wintering water birds.

Although the fluctuating water level is less favorable for breeding birds, the Echinger reservoir is also of national importance as a breeding area. Several species that are endangered or threatened with extinction in Bavaria breed here. An information booth was built in the village of Eching for information purposes.
