Paul Strenkert

Paul Strenkert (born January 9, 1899 in Oedheim , † December 1, 1989 in Paderborn ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( BVP , later CSU ).

Life and work

After attending elementary school and advanced training school, Strenkert completed an apprenticeship as a miner and then worked as a miner in rock salt mining until 1930. Since 1913 he was involved in the Catholic youth and in the Christian trade union , continued his education at a Christian trade union school and attended the Leohaus Social University in 1928/29 . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier .

Strenkert had been the workers' and diocesan secretary and manager of the diocesan association in Augsburg from 1930 . After the National Socialists came to power, he was briefly taken into " protective custody " in 1933 and released from his position as a workers' secretary in 1939 . From 1939 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier . Most recently he was captured.

In 1945 Strenkert participated in the founding of the Bavarian Trade Union Federation (BGB) and the German Trade Union Federation (DGB). From 1946 to 1957 he was again active as workers and diocesan secretary in the Catholic workers 'movement (Katholisches Werkvolk) in the diocese of Augsburg and at the same time campaigned for the establishment of Christian workers' organizations. In addition, from 1950 to 1957 he served as chairman of the board of AOK Kempten and as a board member of the state insurance company in Swabia . He was also President of the Allgäuer Katholikentage from 1953 to 1957 , Vice President of the 78th German Katholikentage in Berlin in 1958 and subsequently President of the Catholic Social Week in Germany.

Political party

Strenkert was a member of the BVP from 1918 until it was dissolved in 1933. He participated in the founding of the CSU in 1945 and was elected to the party's state executive committee.

MP

Strenkert was a council member of the city of Kempten in 1932/33 and from 1945 to 1962. In 1950 he was elected to the Bavarian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1966. Here he was from 1950 to 1958 a member of the Committee for Social Policy Affairs.

Public offices

On October 16, 1957, Strenkert was appointed State Secretary for Labor and Social Welfare in the government of the Free State of Bavaria led by Prime Minister Hanns Seidel and was also a member of the follow-up government led by Prime Minister Hans Ehard . After the formation of a sole government of the CSU, he was appointed Minister of State for Labor and Social Welfare by Prime Minister Alfons Goppel on December 11, 1962 . On June 24, 1964, he resigned from this office and was replaced by Hans Schütz .
