The Musisches Gymnasium in Bavaria
The Musisches Gymnasium in Bavaria is a specialty that does not exist in other German federal states . Nevertheless, it is a grammar school that leads to a general higher education entrance qualification. A graduate does not necessarily have to pursue a music or art degree. In the Musisches Gymnasium, musical inclinations are encouraged, as they are not only present in those with above-average musical talent, but also in those with normal talent. There are a total of 56 grammar schools in Bavaria with a musical branch, nine of which only offer a musical branch.
From the 5th to the 10th grade, music is always taught for 3 hours (two hours in class and one hour in instrumental group lessons). From the 5th to 10th grade, music is both an advancement subject and a core subject . The subject of art is taught for 2 hours from the 5th to the 10th grade. Art is an advancement subject, but not a core subject.
It is compulsory for the pupils from the 5th to the 10th grade to play an instrument, the performance of which is included in the musical grade as a practical grade, which is evaluated in the weighting to the theoretical grade 1: 1.
Up until the 2001/2002 school year it was compulsory to learn a keyboard instrument (piano / organ) or a string instrument as a compulsory instrument in the first three school years. Since the 2002/2003 school year, students have been allowed to choose another instrument as their main instrument before the 7th grade. In 2009 the list of possible instruments was expanded.
Latin and English are taught as foreign languages. Since 2005 it has been possible to start with either English or Latin. Previously, Latin was compulsory from the 5th grade, which was followed by English in the 7th grade until 1999. Since 1999, the second foreign language has already followed in the 6th grade. The third foreign language is not applicable, but it is optionally possible to learn a foreign language starting late instead of the first or second in grades 10 to 12.
