The Christian-Ernst-Gymnasium (often abbreviated to CEG) is a musical gymnasium in Erlangen .

history

The grammar school goes back to the Vömel'sche private daughters institute founded in 1873 (from 1887 under the name of the municipal higher daughter school ) and the teacher training institute founded in 1904, which was attached to the daughter school. Both schools were grouped under the title Municipal Higher Female Educational Institution . The Prince Regent Luitpold Schoolhouse, newly built in 1902 in neo-baroque style, is a listed building and houses the CEG to this day. Even then, the artistic subjects of German , drawing, singing , violin and gymnastics were emphasized in the training of elementary school teachers . In 1914 the now girls lyzeum in Marie-Therese-Schule in honor of Marie Therese of Austria-Este , the wife of King Ludwig III. from Bavaria , renamed.

In 1946 the girls' college became an upper secondary school and in 1949 a secondary school . From then on, the teacher training institute also accepted male applicants and was expanded and renamed as the State German Gymnasium and Institute for Teacher Training in 1954 . In 1952 the school building on the east and west wing was expanded by a few rooms. In 1956 the teacher training institute moved to Nuremberg ; What was left, in addition to the Marie Therese Realgymnasium, was the German Gymnasium, which was only a quarter as large . In 1963 the two schools were separated, the Marie-Therese-Realgymnasium moved to another building in Erlangen's northern part of the city, the German Gymnasium remained in the previous schoolhouse and shortly afterwards was run as a musical gymnasium .

After the separation, the number of students at the German Gymnasium , named Christian Ernst Gymnasium in honor of Margrave Christian Ernst von Bayreuth , founder of Erlanger Neustadt, rose sharply. In 1963 there were just 281 students, in 1974 the number of more than 900 students, which is still common today, was reached. Since 1977 the school has also been running a study seminar for the subjects German, English, history , social studies , Protestant religious studies and female sport . In 2006, an additional building was built on the site in order to be able to offer lunch in the afternoon classes , which are more frequent due to the eight-year high school, and the optional all-day classes .

Special features due to the type of school

The musical high school requires learning to play a musical instrument from the 5th to the 10th grade. The arts subjects music and art education , as well as the subject German, are taught with more hours per week than at other types of grammar schools; Music is also a core subject and, in contrast to non-artistic grammar schools, it is also relevant to promotion in the lower grades . Both in music and art education were G9 in the Kollegstufe constantly advanced courses offered, also by students of the Fridericianum Erlangen school could be occupied. In the current G8, it is possible to choose an additum that roughly corresponds to these advanced courses , as at all other Bavarian schools. The difference, however, is that both music and art additions can be offered every year due to the musical profile and the resulting greater influx (cf. Additum ). Since the CEG is one of only four artistic high schools in Middle Franconia - the others in Nuremberg ( Labenwolf-Gymnasium ), Schwabach ( WEG ) and Ansbach ( Carolinum ) - the catchment area extends around 15 km beyond Erlangen to Höchstadt an der Aisch im North, Eckental in the east, and partly Fürth in the south. 60 percent of the students do not come from the city of Erlangen, over 70 percent are female.

Other special features

  • The Christian-Ernst-Gymnasium is a seminar school for young high school teachers in the subjects German, English, Latin, geography, ethics, history, social studies and sport (female)
  • Since June 2011 the school has been a member of the nationwide action alliance "School without Racism - School with Courage" under the sponsorship of the sports presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein

Improper asbestos removal

The Christian-Ernst-Gymnasium had to be closed for at least a week in the autumn of 1991 as a result of improper asbestos removal . The asbestos was released in the area of the music booths under the roof. After the number of fibers had dropped to 1000 / m³ air - achieved by repeatedly wiping the floors with a damp cloth - the building was reopened for school operations.
