The Wolfram-von-Eschenbach-Gymnasium (WEG, formerly DG) is a music high school in Schwabach . It is named after the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach , who lived and worked in Wolframs-Eschenbach .

history

The Wolfram-von-Eschenbach-Gymnasium goes back to the royal Bavarian school teacher seminar founded on November 15, 1843. This was located in the former breeding and work house at Wittelsbacher Straße 1 in the center of Schwabach, a mighty sandstone building that is under monumental and ensemble protection with D-5-65-000-214 . In 1918 the seminar was renamed the teacher training institute (LBA). For the school year 1934/1935 the school was completely restructured and it became the "German Advanced School" with Abitur qualification, which then continued to exist from May 1949 as the "short form of the higher school". The teacher training was only continued between 1946/1947 and after the denazification of Schwabach from 1954 to 1956. In 1954 the school was renamed "Deutsches Gymnasium". The abbreviation “DG” is still in use today for the old school building. Since 1962 the school ran a pedagogical seminar for teacher training. In 1965 the school was given its current name and in 1977 was able to move into a modern new school building in the south of the city. This was expanded again in 2007 due to the increased number of students.

Trainee lawyers are still being trained as teachers, currently in the subjects of German , English , geography , social studies , sports history and school psychology .

music

The school's musical life is diverse and shapes the school. There are traditionally annual Christmas, Mardi Gras and high school graduation concerts to which the public is also welcome. There are also various concerts by music teachers with their students, various choirs and orchestras, which also take place outside the school. The big band dacapo , which has recorded several CDs since it was founded in 1987 and appeals to a wide audience, is of particular importance and can be booked as a gala band with a smaller cast. In addition, musicals rehearsed by the students have also been performed for several years. Learning an instrument is compulsory from the fifth grade onwards. In the past these were exclusively piano or violin , since the mid-1990s other instruments such as trumpet , clarinet , saxophone etc. have also been permitted. The instrumental lessons are given in addition to the regular music lessons with two to three other students from an instrument teacher.

Musicals

Every four years musicals are rehearsed and performed at the Wolfram-von-Eschenbach-Gymnasium.

languages

Since 2001, students have been able to choose English or Latin as their first foreign language from the fifth grade , while before that, Latin was compulsory as the first foreign language. The other, second foreign language is then added from the sixth grade, previously this was the case from the seventh grade. This rule is common in Bavaria during eight years of high school (G8). From the ninth grade (previously tenth grade) students can opt out of Latin and learn Spanish as a new foreign language instead . Furthermore, the students can take the elective French and the elective Chinese.

Student exchange

The WEG has a student exchange with the Rainbow High School in Gargždai / Lithuania and the Brentwood School in Brentwood , Essex in southeast England . During the many years of exchange with the Brentwood School, there has been particularly close contact between the two school big bands . The bands meet every year (alternating between Schwabach and Brentwood) and give several concerts for the guests. In addition, there is an annual student exchange with the boys' grammar school in Malta and another English exchange with a grammar school in Telford.

Others

The Wolfram-von-Eschenbach-Gymnasium is the only music school south of Nuremberg between Ansbach and Neumarkt. Therefore the catchment area is very extensive. It extends in the north to the southern districts of Nuremberg, in the east to Wendelstein , in the south far beyond the Roth district to Pleinfeld and Weißenburg and in the west to the Fürth district . A small bus station has therefore been built right next to the school for the learner drivers and the surrounding residential areas, which is served by the VGN with ten lines on weekdays .

There is a library and a cafeteria . The school also operates a photovoltaic system and maintains a small biotope .
