The Humboldt-Gymnasium ( HGU ) is one of the seven general high schools in Ulm and at the same time its oldest school.
It is an old and new language and mathematical and natural science high school with a musical element. Both Latin and English are offered as the first foreign language, and music as a subject can optionally be increasingly attended from the 5th grade.
history
middle Ages
The first written mention of a Latin school , from which today's Humboldt-Gymnasium was to emerge, is in 1294; Almost 100 years later, in 1383, the Reichenau monastery handed over sovereignty over the school to the city of Ulm.
The Ulm Latin School was especially famous in the 15th century.
Early modern age
The Franciscan monastery in Ulm was rededicated during the Reformation of the 16th century and now served the city of Ulm as a Latin school.
In 1879 the buildings and the church, which had become useless after the construction of a new grammar school, were demolished to "expose" Münsterplatz. The aim was to have a clear view of the church tower of Ulm Minster, which was about to be completed.
In 1613 the school became a formal high school under the superintendent Konrad Dieterich . During Dieterich's tenure, the previous Latin school was expanded to become a philosophical-theological college. The school, called "Gymnasium academicum" since 1615, was headed by director Dieterich from 1620 onwards.
Recent and Recent History
Several later members of the White Rose resistance group emerged from the humanistic grammar school, which at that time did not yet have the name Humboldt : In addition to Hans Scholl , who was a student at the Kepler grammar school , the several years younger members of the "Ulm high school graduate group" Hans Hirzel , Franz J. Müller , Heinrich Guter and Heinz Brenner .
“ The People's Court noticed that three pupils (including Heinrich Guter) from a school class appear in this matter and that more were mentioned! Something must not be right, which is in the spirit of this class and which the Senate cannot blame these boys alone. One is ashamed that there is such a class at a German humanistic grammar school! "
In this second trial against members of the White Rose and against the group of students from the Ulm grammar school, the President of the People's Court, Roland Freisler , yelled at the opening of the accused that National Socialism did not need a criminal code at all against such "traitors". He will make short work of “absolutely no right”. Criminal judge Freisler corrected himself and improved: "without any law". When an assessor handed him the penal code without a word, he immediately hurled it in the direction of the dock, where the defendants ducked to avoid being hit in the head.
The current school building was occupied in 1956, as the school building, which was occupied in 1878, was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War . The school was named Humboldt-Gymnasium , and the tradition of the music train began with the establishment of a music school at the HGU.
A development association was founded as early as 1926 ; 30 years later, in 1956, it was re-established as an eV with the name "Association of Friends of the Humboldt-Gymnasium".
In 2000, the eight-year Abitur was introduced.
In 2006, the new building, supported by the city of Ulm with 6.5 million euros, was inaugurated by Mayor Ivo Gönner . Construction started in 2004.
The old building has been renovated since July 2008. The renovation of the physics and chemistry rooms was completed at the end of the 2009/2010 school year.
Thanks to its promotion of music, the Humboldt-Gymnasium is traditionally home to well-known student orchestras (Sinfonietta Ulm) and choirs in Ulm.
