Nabada ([ ˈnaːbaːdɜ ], Swabian for "bathing down") is a traditional water parade that takes place every year in Ulm on the afternoon of Oath Monday, the penultimate Monday in July.

origin

The Nabada is based on several old events: Already around 1800 it was mentioned that the youth bathed down the Danube to the excursion restaurants and carried their clothes with them in tubs. An old church consecration custom described the peasant driving down . Here the peasant couple were driven down the Danube on boards that were laid over two barges and swings were used to push them into the river. The first official Nabada took place in 1927. At the end of the 1960s, the Nabada was opened to all participants. Previously, this was only allowed to the organizing associations.

From 4:00 p.m. hundreds of “nabaders” will be in the water of the Danube , drifting down the Danube on self-made and other driving devices and splashing each other wet. The spraying of spectators on the bank is officially not wanted; Not only because of complaints from soaked spectators, but also because injuries from water buckets, water pistols etc. have already occurred. The audience chants the battle cry to cheer (see also Ulmer Spatz ):

"Ulmer Spatza, Wasserratza, hoi, hoi, hoi" .

The week before, different groups have the opportunity to bring a topic to an approximately 25 m² platform, which is mounted on two barges, about 7 meters long wooden barges. The other participants on unofficial rafts and everything that the water carries are called "wild nabaders" - a term that aptly describes the goings-on.

The whole thing is not unlike the big carnival parades in Cologne and Düsseldorf , as local, regional and national topics and people are humorously poked at. A number of music associations, which travel down the Danube in barges that fluctuate in rhythm, contribute to the exuberant atmosphere. The audience can vote for the best themed boat and the best music club, it will be awarded with lucrative prizes. Depending on the weather and water level, this spectacle can last two to three hours. Afterwards the party will continue in the squares and streets, in Friedrichsau and in the pubs in Ulm and Neu-Ulm .

If the “Nabada” has to be canceled, the “red baskets” will be attached to the Ulm Minster .

On July 21, 2008, the Nabada failed for the first time in 23 years due to flooding and the strong current of the Danube with it on Oath Monday. The other festivities on the Danube and in the city took place as usual.

Virtual Nabada 2020

Because the contact restrictions against the COVID-19 epidemic must at the Ulm Oath , not take place following the Schwörrede, the traditional water moving Nabada. In order to enable the people of Ulm to have an interactive Nabada, the Service Club Round Table 93 Ulm / Neu-Ulm organized a virtual Nabada. Participants can upload creative pictures on the subject of Nabada free of charge on the online platform www.nabada.de. These can then be rated by sharing them on social networks. The pictures with the highest approval ratings have the chance of an individual win. There is also a voluntary donation campaign in favor of the local "Aktion 100,000", which supports social projects in the Ulm, Neu-Ulm and in the two districts of Alb-Danube and Neu-Ulm. The mayor of Ulm, Gunter Czisch , is the patron of the virtual Nabada . The former mayor of Ulm, Ivo Gönner, and the mayor of Neu-Ulm , Katrin Albsteiger, support this project.
