Ivo Gönner
Ivo patrons (* 18th February 1952 in Laupheim ) is a German SPD - local politicians and was 1992-2016 Mayor of Ulm .
education and profession
Ivo Gönner was born the son of a Laupheim pharmacist and grew up in Laupheim in Upper Swabia . He attended the St. Blasien college in the Black Forest . He did his community service in Ulm before studying law at the University of Heidelberg . In 1978 Gönner returned to Ulm when he became a trainee lawyer at the regional court and then worked as an independent lawyer until 1992 .
Political activity
From 1980 Ivo Gönner was a member of the local council, where he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in 1985, before replacing Ernst Ludwig from the CDU as mayor in 1992 . In 1999 he was re-elected with 79.9%. His challenger Frank Ahnefeld (CDU) achieved only 14.1%. In the election on December 2, 2007, he was re-elected for the second time with 80.2%; in this election, the CDU did not put forward a candidate of its own from the start.
As Lord Mayor of Ulm, Gönner was also chairman of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Ulm . In the summer of 2007 he fought against the portrayal of Ulm as a refuge for Islamist terrorists and the center of their recruitment. From 2001 to 2005 Gönner was chairman of the social democratic community for local politics in Baden-Württemberg. In 2002 he was appointed spokesman for the nine major cities of Baden-Württemberg in the Association of Cities and Deputy of the then President of the Association of Baden-Württemberg Cities . He was President of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities from 2005 to the end of 2010. In the discussion about Stuttgart21, Gönner proved to be a staunch supporter of this project. In February 2012, Gönner was elected to the Presidium of the German Association of Cities .
On November 29, 2015, Gunter Czisch (CDU) was elected Gönner's successor as Lord Mayor. The handover took place on February 29, 2016. On April 1, 2016, Gönner joined a friend's law firm.
Other offices, honors and awards
Ivo Gönner was a member of the University Council of the Weingarten University of Education from 2000 to 2015. From 2012 to 2015 he was President of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU).
On April 23, 2016, Gönner was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann in Ludwigsburg Palace for his services during his 24-year term as Lord Mayor of Ulm . On July 18, 2016, the first oath Monday after Gönner's end of office as Lord Mayor, his successor in office, Gunter Czisch , made him an honorary citizen of the city of Ulm for his special services, in particular as a “promoter of the city of science and business location”.
In recognition of his many years of outstanding commitment as head of the city for the science city on the Ulm Eselsberg , Gönner was awarded the honor of the University of Ulm's Honorary Senator on July 21, 2017 as part of the celebrations on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Ulm University.
Family and private
Ivo Gönner is married to the journalist Susanne Schwarzkopf-Gönner and has two children.
