Social Democratic Community for Local Politics

The social democratic community for local politics (Bundes-SGK) is the union of the social democratic German local politicians . The Federal SGK is a registered association and not a branch of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) . The SGK aims to implement social democratic principles in local politics. The Federal SGK was founded in 1978 in Kassel . In addition to the Federal SGK, there are regional associations in all countries .

Members

The SGK has 25,000 members. The members include members of the representations of the cities, municipalities and districts, district representatives, knowledgeable citizens working in committees, employees of the municipalities as well as persons who have an office in the public administration or a function in the SPD with local political relevance.

The specialist body of the Federal SGK is the “ Democratic Community ”, or DEMO for short. The chairman of the federal SGK is Frank Baranowski , Lord Mayor of Gelsenkirchen (SPD).

tasks

  • Development of recommendations and working aids for practical policy in the municipal representations and bodies
  • Representation of the interests of social democratic local politicians vis-à-vis the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the federal government
  • Implementation of nationwide symposia, conferences and seminars for the purpose of further training and information for social democratic local politicians
  • Maintaining contacts with the central municipal associations at the federal level as well as with other national and international institutions that are important for local politics
