The Democratic Community (DEMO) is a German specialist journal for local politics and a specialist body of the Social Democratic Community for Local Politics (Bundes-SGK) . It is aimed at local politics, administration and economy, i.e. at mayors, department heads, councilors and parliamentary groups in cities, municipalities and districts as well as the states and the federal government.

history

The first edition appeared in October 1949 as a monthly for local politics in town and country . The "Demokratische Gemeinde" followed the magazine for local political practitioners "Die Gemeinde", a bi-monthly publication for socialist work in town and country, published from 1924 until the ban in 1933 by JHW Dietz Nachf. Bonn .

The first editor of the democratic community was the city director of the city of Hemer at the time , Heinz Hoose. The editors-in-chief since then have been Hermann Fischer (1955–1967), Karlheinz Böhm (1967–1971), Heinz Höller (1971–1983), Ansgar Burghof (1983–1997), Hendrik Zörner (1997–1998), Stefan Grönebaum (1998–2010) Fréderic Verrycken (2010–2011), Barbara Behrends (2011–2015). Karin Nink has been editor-in-chief of DEMO since May 2015 .

The publisher of the DEMO was from 2009 to 2016 Norbert Bude , Lord Mayor of Mönchengladbach and Chairman of the Federal SGK . Frank Baranowski has been chairman of the Federal SGK and publisher of DEMO since 2016 .

The Democratic Community appears at the Berliner vorwärts Verlagsgesellschaft , the publishing house of the SPD party organ Vorwärts , which is a full subsidiary of the SPD media holding ddvg .
