Karl Heim , from 1868 von Heim , (* December 20, 1820 in Walddorf near Tübingen ; † April 8, 1895 in Ulm ) was a lawyer, Lord Mayor of Ulm and a member of the German Reichstag .

Parents, ancestors

Karl Heim was the third of nine children of the Walddorf mayor (1824 to 1837; on April 16, 1835 awarded the golden "Civil Merit Medal") Johann Georg Heim (* 1791 † 1837) and his wife Maria Barbara nee. Heim (* 1793 † 1840), a daughter of the Walddorf ox farmer Carl Heim.

Life

Heim attended the Latin schools in Nürtingen and Tübingen . After confirmation, he worked as a notary's assistant at Notar Wiedersheim in Walddorf. On November 11, 1840, he enrolled at the University of Tübingen , where he studied law until 1846, including his internship . In May 1846, Heim passed the second judicial service examination, after which he was first appointed provisional court actuary in Weinsberg , confirmed in this office on June 18, 1846, Karl Heim was senior court administrator in Langenburg in 1849 , and in Oberndorf am Neckar in 1850 . In Oberndorf, on January 30, 1851, he was appointed chief magistrate. On February 23, 1854, Karl Heim was finally appointed senior justice advisor at the court in Ulm.

On April 21, 1863, Karl Heim was elected to the city council of Ulm (2,080 votes). The requested release from civil service was granted on May 28, 1863. The inauguration took place on July 27, 1863. On September 27, 1864, the Württemberg king awarded Heim the title of Lord Mayor. From 1863 to 1890 he was Lord Mayor of Ulm. The outstanding achievement of his tenure was the completion of the cathedral extension . But more important was the improvement of the sewage system and the drinking water supply.

From 1877 to 1881 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Württemberg 14 ( Ulm , Heidenheim , Geislingen ) and the German Reich Party .

On November 24, 1890, von Heim asked for his retirement at the end of the year due to his poor health. Heinrich von Wagner was elected as his successor in 1891 .

Karl von Heim died in Ulm on the night of April 8th to 9th, 1895 and was buried in Ulm on April 11th (funeral speech by Dean Bilfinger). The tomb on the "Old Cemetery" in Ulm still exists.

Honors

Karl von Heim received the following awards and honors:

  • 1864: Knight's Cross of the Friedrich Order
  • 1868: Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which raised him to the personal nobility
  • 1871: Order of Olga
  • 1871: Knight's Cross 1st class with oak leaves from the Baden Order of the Zähringer Löwen
  • 1871: Knight's Cross of the Bavarian Order of Merit of St. Michael
  • 1888: Appointment as honorary citizen of Ulm on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of service
  • 1889: Commentary Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown
  • Prussian Order of the Crown, 2nd class
  • On July 5, 1897, the Karl-von-Heim memorial was inaugurated on the Karlsplatz in Ulm (the memorial is now at the justice building at the Hafenbad)
  • 1900: Name of a street (Heimstraße) after the deceased mayor
  • In addition, Karl von Heim was an honorary member of the veterans' association "Prince Hermann zu Sachsen-Weimar" and the warrior association "Queen Olga"
