Bonifacius Stöltzlin

Bonifacius Stöltzlin (born June 7, 1603 in Giengen , † January 28, 1677 in Kuchen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and author.

Life

Bonifacius Stöltzlin was born as the second child of the school and arithmetic master David Stöltzlin from Giengen and his wife Katharina Amann. One of his older brothers was the painter and engraver Johann Stöltzlin (1594–1680).

Stöltzlin attended the Latin school in Giengen and the grammar school in Ulm , where he was accepted into the Ulm citizenship. On April 24, 1626 he enrolled at the University of Strasbourg , where he studied theology until 1629. Then he returned to Ulm, where he was intended for pastoral positions in the Ulm countryside. In 1631 he came to Weiler ob Helfenstein , 1634 to Bollingen-Tomerdingen , 1635 to Holzheim and 1636 to Steinheim . There he experienced the Thirty Years War with all its looting, torture and other suffering.

In 1656 Stöltzlin took over the pastoral office of Kuchen, which he filled for 21 years until his death. Here, too, he continued his writing activity. He published more than 20 Christian books, including sermon collections, prayer and edification books, some of which had multiple editions, and composed 19 spiritual songs, which can be found in various song collections. For the church in Kuchen he had some religious pictures made by his brother Johann, city painter in Ulm.

He was married twice, in 1631 with Veronica born. Bachmayer, after her death in 1656 with the widow Sara Sachs born. Hero. Both are shown together with him on his picture epitaph.

His son David, born on February 6, 1670, studied in Jena, Strasbourg and Tübingen and, as a professor at the Ulm grammar school, published the history of the imperial city of Ulm.
