religion

Due to the influence of Ulm, the Steinheim population is predominantly Protestant . The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Nicholas, built in 1471, is located in the center of the village.

In 1877 the Nikolaus Church received a new organ . The instrument with 6  registers on a manual and pedal was one of the last works of the Augsburg organ builder Joseph Anton Bohl (1801–1878). The case of the original organ has been preserved and the work has been renewed twice.

Attractions

Roman times

The old Roman Danube South Road runs through Steinheim . Its course is identical to the connecting road from Finningen, Burlafinger Straße and Straßer Weg. Originally, the Roman road served as a connecting road between Hüfingen near the source of the Danube to Constantinople .

Buchberg

In the north is the 493 meter high Buchberg, an alluvial cone in front of the glacial drainage valley of the Danube, which towers over the place by about 25 meters. At the foot of the hill in a southern position, there are still remains of a beer cellar. This underlines the earlier importance of the hill as an excursion destination with weekend houses.

Although it is assumed that a castle on the Buchberg is close due to its strategic location, no signs of this have been found to date. Aerial photographs once gave rise to the assumption that a Roman estate, a so-called Villa Rustica , might have stood on the hill . However, no further archaeological investigations have taken place so far. The border between the territories of Ulm-Reichenau and Elchingen-Burgau ran directly to the Buchberg, along the Leibi and the Landgraben.

There are numerous stories and legends about the Buchberg. One of them deals with a castle on the Buchberg.

In ancient times, a castle is said to have stood on the Buchberg, in which a rich knight family lived. They had two daughters, one of whom was kind and good but blind, the other proud, angry and stingy. Every Sunday the count drove with his two daughters in a carriage to the church in Nersingen. The bells rang on their way there and back, because the lord of the castle is said to have donated a bell for the Nersingen church. After the father's death, the daughters decided to share their inheritance fairly. They measured the money in cups. Here, the sighted have taken advantage of the blind by overturning the cup and only filling the bottom edge. The blind woman ran her hand over it and was satisfied.

As a punishment for this, the sighted person later had to walk around the castle. The dishonest one is said to have appeared to Schmid von Nersingen once, to whom she told what had happened and asked him to go with her. You would have to go through seven doors and find the devil sitting on a money chest with the key in hand. If he were to snatch the key from the devil, all the money would belong to him, but she would then be redeemed. Then both of them went through the doors. When they got to the last door and Schmid heard the devil roar, his heart fell into his pocket, and after calling the three holy names, he was standing in the open.

Soil monuments

There are several historical ground monuments in the immediate vicinity of Steinheim .

To the east in the area "Links vom Straßer Weg" there is a large field with a burial mound dating from prehistoric times . To the northeast of the sewage treatment plant there is a settlement dating back to prehistoric times. A settlement from the Neolithic , the Urnfield Period and the Roman Empire can be found on the Buchberg . To the north of the "Vorderen Hahnenberg", south of the road connecting Finningen and Steinheim, there is a settlement from the early Neolithic . At the extreme eastern boundary of the municipality of Nersingen there is another settlement, graves and ditches from prehistoric times. Body graves from the Middle Ages can also be found directly south of Straßer Weg at the entrance to the village. All historical ground monuments are not visible on the ground.

Castle in Steinheim

Castles

There are three castles or mansions in Steinheim. The most noticeable, Steinheim Castle , is located on Bauernstrasse. It was built around 1619 for the Ulm patricians Albrecht and Magdalena Schleicher. The other two buildings are no longer recognizable as a mansion or a castle, as they were heavily rebuilt in the past. The patrician castle Steinheim is located at Buchbergstrasse 5 and was converted to its present form in the 18th century. The former Steinheim manor was probably built in the 16th century. It is located at Remmeltshofer Straße 3 and is now a heavily modified residential building.
